As simple as this may sound, one of the questions I get a lot from family and friends is “how do I start yoga?” Honestly, the answer is easy. You start yoga the same way you start any new thing in your life, which is to…just start! I believe starting is the most important step. After starting, you will enter into this world of inquiry. Just like any new thing in life, right? Once you start, you start learning new things about your body, your posture, your diet, and BAM! You are now running across research, different techniques, and even networking with people who share that same interest. This would not have happened if you did not start. So, like I tell many of my friends and families, just START. Do not think too hard about this simple task. Just do it.
Now if you want me to get a bit personal, I started my yoga practice from YouTube. I remember searching the Internet the year I got engaged for ab workouts. I stumbled upon a yoga workout on YouTube (I believe garage yoga is the name). I did it, and I actually broke a sweat. I was mind blown. Like wait. Am I really sweating from yoga? After that video, I added yoga into my workout regimen. At this time, I was only doing yoga one to two times a week. I was doing it because I liked the way it made me feel. My back pains from scoliosis decreased significantly just from doing yoga a few times a week, my posture improved immensely, I was sleeping better, AND my shoulders and abs were starting to tone up. So after about a year of doing yoga at home, I decided to take one of the classes my gym was offering. It was great! A lot better than my home yoga workouts. For 3 years, I practiced yoga at my local gym for about 2-3 times a week. It was not until 4 months ago, that I actually visited a yoga studio. I should have done this earlier! Practicing yoga at your local gym compared to an actual yoga studio is just different. Very different, I’ll leave it at that.
